FUGLY ~ explicit lyrics (2017)
… And NOW for something different!
Most of what you may have heard from Skookum may be considered aggressive and grooving rock, but the band doesn’t mind slowing down once in a while. Fugly is a popular and heavily requested “campfire song” within the bands inner circle of friends and family, with its hilarious easy to follow sing-along lyrics. It’s been one of our best kept secrets… until now.
Following the experiences of our narrator, he serenades us with his endless efforts to reach out to that very special girl. Desperately hopeful she will agree to be his life mate, he is repeatedly and embarrassingly rebuffed; yet, through a powerful character arc our rather homely hero goes from zero …. to … umm … more zero….? Well, maybe he learns a thing or two about himself… yeah … let’s go with that!
Recorded at Greenhouse Studios in Vancouver BC, by producer and engineer Doug Naugler, Fugly is at its core a simple acoustic song with catchy and funny lyrics and room for great big gang vocals.
Listening to early demos, the discovery was made early on in the process to record what once could have been an 80’s power ballad. The band hunkered down in sessions and with Naugler’s addition of the organ and glockenspiel, he gave it a great down-homey country steak feeling.
~ Enjoy, and don’t be afraid to tell that special “someone” that you care. (Available for purchase)

Skookum salutes Olympics with Canadian anthem… for Rye
Press Release 2010
Lead singer/guitarist Cory “Vanman” Van Ieperen describes the state of things for Rye lovers internationally:
“Go into any pub or liquor outlet outside of Canada and Rye Whiskey is hard to come by! I was in Trafalgar Square in London once and found a shop boasting ‘Every whiskey from around the world’. When I asked for Wisers they thought I was a space alien. They had never even heard of Crown Royal!”
Drummer Norm “Storm” Baker was the catalyst to make the song into video:
“Any true-blooded Canadian will absolutely relate to this song and this video. It’s the ultimate party anthem. It was our duty to make this video!”
Vanman, who penned the song, explains further:
“The song is an homage to the grassroots of my hometown which is like many across the nation. Coming from small towns across Canada, when the band gets together to party, our drink of choice is always Rye. “
The video was independently produced by Vanman's longtime friend Jason Williams of Williams World Media and animated by Corycatures (Cory Van is a self employed cartoonist). "Rye (Can't Remember)" is found on Skookum's latest album, Rockstar Dreamers, released August of 2009, (CD available through their website or iTunes).
El Stinko
Press Release 2010
SKOOKUM played the Pic Pub before it shut its doors and footage of our set was shot. The film footage is from a locally produced indie flick called “Revenge Inc” which sadly has had a microcosmic release (meaning…hasn’t really seen the light of day despite original intentions due to funding). An early mix of El Stinko, off the Big Phat Sounds album is featured in the soundtrack. The guy on the drums is Norm the Storm who played with the band briefly before being replaced by our Big Daddy, “Python”…..that’s evolution baby!
So with little fanfare, very little plot line and a whole lotta “the Stink”….check out our new/old video….EL STINKO!
This is our first single from our debut album, “Big Phat Sounds”. You can purchase it at CDBaby via CD or Download: http://cdbaby.com/cd/skookum

“Either sit back and snicker at the soaring rocker “World Comes Crashing In”, or grab an air guitar and unleash your inner Ronnie Van Zant while earnestly knocking back a bottle of Jack. Or you could just as easily do both, because with Pleasure Cruz, there’s no telling which decision is right, possibly because neither is wrong.” ~ Mike Usinger (the Georgia Straight) on Twitter: @mikeusinger.
“Skookum seems on a mission from God to fuse borrowed parts of Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction, Thin Lizzy, and Spinal Tap. Except that the trio doesn’t seem to be in on the joke, if in fact there is one.” ~ Mike Usinger (the Georgia Straight) on Twitter: @mikeusinger.
